Ballarat by Hire Car

Ballarat is a beautiful little town in rural Victoria to the north west of Melbourne. In fact it is not so little and is home to about 30,000 people meaning also that there are quite a few car rental options and there are also a lot of things to see by car.

Ballarat itself enjoys quite a history in Australia and is affectionately known by locals and other Aussies as “The Rat” (think self deprecating humour!). There are also a few historical sites related to Australia’s gold rush era in the 1850s that many people come to see. Car rental is generally the best option if you don’t want to do the package tour deals. Public transport is light and taxis can be quite expensive as with anywhere in Australia.

There are several state forests and national parks within driving distance of Ballarat and you can easily do a day trip into Melbourne if you want to look around. You can also get to other regional centres such as Bendigo quite easily. Further away are the main cities of Adelaide to the west and Canberra to the north.
